HELLO 2017!

Happy New Year!
I decided to include my family in the January newsletter! So this is the Christensen Clan winding down from 2016 and looking forward to many blessings in 2017!  One of highlights of 2016 was celebrating my husband Bruce’s 60th Birthday fishing with all of our kids.  I also took a little excursion to the Chicago Botanical Gardens late this fall with my daughter April.   If you are ever in the Chicago area the botanical gardens are a beautiful place to see plants in action!
With this newsletter we mark the start of a new gardening year.  Just think of all the possibilities it has to offer.   The seed catalogs are marching 3×3 into my place and I am excited to see all of the new seeds and plant material. For the next couple months I will keep you up to date on the new items that will be available at The Petal Patch as well as upcoming events including The Container Parties!  So stay in touch via email or Facebook and stay informed!

Branching Out For You

Trimming Shrubs

Many people have asked me about trimming shrubs.  There are many shrubs on the market and the best advice I can give you is to make sure you ask this question when you purchase the shrub.  Usually there is a good tag on each item and if there isn’t please ask.

There is a saying if they bloom in the spring trim them after they have bloomed and if they bloom in the fall trim them in the spring! Some spring bloomers to trim after they bloom: Chokeberry, Forsythia, Lilac, and Early Blooming Spirea. Some shrubs to trim in late fall or early spring before new growth begins: Barberry, Burning Bush, Dogwoods, Honeysuckle, Ninebarks, Purpleleaf Sandcherry, Smokebush, and Sumac. Hydrangea trimming questions: www.finegardening.com or https:www.reference.com There are many types of Hydrangea which should be pruned at different times depending on whether they flower on old or new wood.  Many questions have been asked about Hibiscus also.  There are many cultivars of Hibiscus.   Some are tropical, some are perennial (Rose Mallow)and some are shrubs or Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus).  Rose of Sharon blooms in late summer and early fall.  Now is the time to trim the Rose of Sharon since it just got done blooming.  I hope this information helps!

Fall Gardening Awaits

Fall Gardening Awaits

The weather this weekend makes me think fall is right around the corner.  I thought I better get busy and update you on what will be happening at The Petal Patch. We will be opening September 6th with bulbs, iris, mums, peonies, shrubs, and perennials. Fall is a great time to plant!  The temperatures are cooling down which enables perennials and shrubs to root in quickly.  Come check out our great selection!!

We will be offering hardy Mums from Minnesota once again along with those diva decorative mums for your patio.  Plant your mums in the ground early, water and mulch them good and you should be set for the winter ahead.  Don’t cut them down in the spring until they start to show green around the base.

The Petal Patch is also open by appointment in August so if you are in need of mulch or plants for that special landscape project, don’t hesitate to call us. Starting September 6th we will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 10-6 and Saturdays 12-5.   Our last day for fall sales will be October 1st.

It is always a good idea to stop fertilizing your perennials and shrubs so they harden off properly in preparation for winter.  If you continue to fertilize, the plants put on new growth and might not make it through the winter.

As always thank you so much for your business and friendship!!
If there is something you need, just give us a call at 402-226-3721.  We are happy to help you out.

BURSTING WITH PLANTS

BURSTING WITH PLANTS

The Petal Patch is bursting with plants.  While the winds and weather have been interesting, we have kept everything comfy, but now it is time to give these plants a new home.  Our greenhouse roof blew off in the wind on April 15th but it was replaced with the help of many neighbors.  That is one of the special things about living in a small community – you can always count on great help in time of need.  We are looking forward to seeing all of you in the coming month to shop for plants for your containers or to find that special perennial to add to your landscape.  We also have some new pottery, iron and great garden junk from Front Porch Antiques.  Stop by for our Sip of Spring on April 30th from 2:00 until 6:00 and enjoy a glass of wine while you shop.  Superior Estates Winery will be hosting the wine tasting and music will be provided by the Sons of the Republic.  Join us for a relaxing afternoon to benefit Nuckolls County Cancer Stomp and Thayer County Relay for Life.

MARCHING INTO SPRING

The weather has been beautiful but don’t let Mother Nature fool you!  There are probably cooler temperatures to come so be careful about uncovering all of your perennials and cleaning up your flower beds.  Your best bet would be to wait until perennials really start to grow before trimming them back and not uncovering them until our last frost date around April 23rd (50% probability).

The Petal Patch will be opening April 6th and bursting with plants to inspire you.  We are excited to see all of our gardening friends again.  In the meantime, make sure you keep up with The Petal Patch on Facebook because we are giving away some nice plants.

Please make sure you are on our email list to find out what is happening at The Petal Patch.  We are giving away a 2.5” annual plant to anyone who shares their email address with us.  All of the customers that share their email on our website will be put into a drawing to win a great prize.  This prize will be revealed in June! So bring it on!!
