Fall Information for Perennial Gardeners
- Fall is a great time to plant new plants as well as divide and move old ones! Take advantage of the cooler fall temperatures to rejuvenate your flower beds.
- I do not recommend fertilizing after the end of July because you do not want to interrupt the dormancy process of your plants.
- Decide which perennials to cut back now. Remember to let some seed heads and grasses alone until spring for winter interest. Some beautiful seed head perennials might include: Echinacea, Aster, Liatris, Rudbeckia, and Sedums. Remember to always leave grasses standing until spring.
- Make sure you cut back Peonies, Iris, Daylilies and Bee Balm. Do this to prevent the spread of disease and decrease pest problems in the spring.
- Remove annuals that are planted with your perennials after the first freeze.
- Remove all weeds now! This decreases reseeding and promotes a clean garden for the spring.
- Continue to water new plants as well as established plants until the ground freezes.
- Mulch, Mulch, Mulch your flower beds for winter protection. Mulch should be 3-4” deep in all flower beds before winter sets in. We will have soybean mulch in bags or bulk available for your convenience.
